How to Use Our Inject & Forget Mushroom Grow Bag

Welcome to the world of mushroom growing!

This is a simple product guide for our inject & forget grow bag from our mushroom grow kits range, and it’s super simple to follow. If you need any help or guidance, please reach out, but it should be very easy to follow.

Take it slow, keep things clean, and enjoy the growing process!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Sterile technique is critical for mushroom growing. Familiarising yourself with these concepts ahead of time will massively increase your chances of a successful grow. For the inoculation phase, you want to be in a nice sanitary environment, or as clean as you can possibly find. A kitchen surface wiped down with 70% isopropyl alcohol or disinfectant is ideal. Make sure to eliminate as much draft as possible from your workspace. Although not strictly necessary, we recommend that you wear gloves and a facemask to complete the inoculation. Sanitise your hands and arms as well as the area that you are working in.

🌱 Before You Start – The Basics

  • Culture / Spores – Like seeds for mushrooms, they contain all the genetic material to grow.
  • Inoculation – Injecting your liquid culture or spores into the grow bag.
  • Incubation – Allowing the mycelium to colonise inside the grow bag.
  • Fruiting – When your mycelium forms baby mushrooms (“pins”) that grow into full mushrooms ready to harvest.
  • Harvesting – You pick your mushrooms and enjoy what you’ve grown.
  • Mycelium – The white root network that grows from spores and feeds on the substrate.

What You’ll Need

🧴 Stage 1 – Inoculation (inject culture or spores)

Goal: Add your spores or liquid culture to the grow bag to start mycelium growth.

Step-by-Step

  1. Clean Your Space
Wipe down your surface with alcohol and make sure there’s no draft. Wash your hands and wear gloves and a mask if possible.
  2. Prepare the Syringe
Shake it for 10 seconds. Attach the sterile needle — but keep the cover on for now.
  3. Mix the Bag
Unfold the bag and give it a gentle squeeze to loosen and mix the contents.
  4. Let Air In
Hold the top of the bag for 2 minutes. The white filter patch will pull in fresh, filtered air. Pro Tip: Mycelium “breathes” oxygen — this step helps it grow faster.
  5. Clean the Injection Port
Wipe the rubber port thoroughly with an alcohol swab.
  6. Inject the Solution
Remove the needle cover, insert it through the injection port, and inject 5ml of solution.
Remove the needle and recap it if you want to store the rest in the fridge (lasts 6+ months).

Pro Tip: If you accidentally touch the needle, flame-sterilise it until red hot, then let it cool to avoid risks of contamination. This could ruin your entire grow if not followed.

That’s it! Your grow bag is now inoculated and ready for incubation (colonisation).

🌡️ Stage 2 – Incubation (let the magic happen)

Goal: Let the mycelium colonise (spread through) the bag.

Step-by-Step

  1. Store Warm & Dark
Keep the bag between 24–27°C, in a dark spot (like a cupboard). Avoid overheating. Avoid exceeding 27°C or you may increase the risk of contamination. We do sell a mushroom incubator that is recommended for this during the colder months in the UK.
  2. Watch for White Growth
After 1–3 weeks, you’ll start to see white patches — that’s healthy mycelium! Be patient — some species take longer, especially if using spore syringes (cultures work faster).
  3. Mix at 30% Colonisation
Once about one-third of the bag is white, gently break up and mix the mycelium through the rest of the substrate. This helps it spread faster.
  4. Wait for Full Colonisation
In another week or two, the bag will turn completely white — a solid block of mycelium.
You’re ready to move to fruiting!

🍄 Stage 3 – Fruiting (grow your mushrooms)

Goal: Create the perfect conditions for mushrooms to grow.

Step-by-Step

  1. Remove the Block
Carefully cut open the bag and take out the white mycelium block (the “cake”). Handle gently and with clean hands.
  2. Place in Fruiting Tent
Put the cake in the fruiting tent provided. Mist the walls of the tent (not the cake) with water until you see condensation.
  3. Add Light & Air
Close the tent with the clip and place it somewhere with indirect light (no direct sun).
Keep it at 21–24°C with 4–6 hours of light per day.
  4. Mist Every Few Days
Check for condensation. If it’s dry, lightly mist the walls again.
Avoid puddles — if water pools, carefully drain it.
  5. Watch for Pins!
In 2–3 weeks, tiny mushrooms (“pins”) will start to appear. These will grow into full mushrooms in just a few days.

✂️ Stage 4 – Harvesting (MUSHROOMS!)

  1. Harvest at the Right Time
Pick mushrooms just as the veil under the cap starts to tear.
After harvesting, mist the cake heavily to rehydrate it.
  2. Get More Flushes
You can usually get 2–3 flushes (crops) from one cake!
Repeat the fruiting steps for each new flush.
  3. Finish & Compost
When no new mushrooms grow or contamination appears, compost the used substrate.

That’s it! Rinse and repeat for your next grow.

💡 Final Tips

  • Keep everything as clean as possible.
  • Be patient! Mushroom growing is slow but rewarding.
  • Enjoy watching your mushrooms come to life!
